COMPUTER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

What is
Computer Manager?

The PC Time Computer Management system is designed to give library users access to standard PC applications such as Word Processing and Internet Access from a terminal installed in a public library.

The system has terminals with attached debit card readers of the type used for membership systems. The user can charge up the card with money and pay a small charge per half hour for use of MS Word (or whatever applications are desired), Internet Access and Printing.

The application is like a portal and can allow hot button access to free services like the library catalogue system and local government services.  Many libraries like to also give access to other suitable information sources like newspapers, whether, educational sites and the like.  These can be set up on hot buttons for easy access.

The system protects the library and the council systems by logging off the application if not used for a pre-set time, resetting the terminal back to the front screen when a user is finished and by limiting access to those areas deemed suitable.  This is even more important as far as undesirable sites go. The screen always reverts back to Home and the History is cleared.

Feature Highlights

  • Providing low cost PC access to users in the library while fully funding the system by the charges levied.

Vastly simplifying the provision of services and hence reducing the workload to library staff.

Because of the structure of the system ability to place terminals almost anywhere the council should desire.

Avoiding overuse of licenses for applications like MS Word by preventing unused sessions from remaining open.

Enabling the provision of the basic system and the printers by requiring a small charge which cumulatively pays for the system and the printers. Many libraries have used the system to pay for colour laser printers for example.

Simple management of use of PCs in the library as all staff needs to do is accept payment occasionally and charge up the user’s cards.  Temporary cards can be used for any casual users who just want to use the terminal for a limited time.

Ability to offer discounts by card type, for example Members or Groups of Members like Seniors, Children etc may get a lower rate, Casuals, like Backpackers pay full rate.

Offers simple menu options so users can find information easily

Reduces staff time showing users where to get info.

The Card System reduces the Cash Handling in the Library. Changing coins and monitoring printing and internet is often a significant hidden overhead of a manual system.

Ensures full recovery of consumable costs.

Card System on Copiers allows for greater flexibility for charging as you are not limited to multiples of coin values, 10 cents, 20 cents etc, you could charge 11 cents per copy if you want.

Making a charge even a small charge, for internet usage limits peoples time spent on the machines making them available for others. If Access is Free then often the Internet Terminals are tied up with people playing games. Library Members wanting to use the terminal for relevant Library use are often disadvantaged when systems are Free.
